Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee
The Faculty Teaching and Learning Committee is charged with four major tasks to be undertaken in consultation with Faculty colleagues. All initiatives reflect University and Faculty strategic planning and require Faculty Academic Board endorsement.
- Faculty representation
The committee is a conduit of information from the (University) Teaching and Learning Committee, liaising to facilitate FHS' adherence to University Teaching and Learning policy and objectives. It also has responsibility for contributing the FHS' experience and expertise to the University's Teaching and Learning policy and initiatives including those related to service teaching.
- Program and planning review
The committee facilitates a strategic review of current programs with reference to their relevance, quality and competitive potential. This requires the development of appropriate mechanisms for review and evaluation. In line with the University's strategic plan, review of undergraduate programs includes the adequacy of content relating to literacy, ethics, technology studies, Aboriginal cultural awareness, cross-cultural studies and other matters determined by the University and the FHS to be of core value to student education and professional practice. Concomitant with this aspect of the strategic review is consideration of the utility of some core units, common to all undergraduate student programs in the FHS. New teaching developments and course changes are referred to the committee for review before submission to FAB. The FHS' Teaching and Learning strategic plan and implementation progress is reviewed annually by the committee and reported to the FAB at its June meeting.
- Teaching and Learning excellence
Guidelines for teaching excellence are to be developed that take proper cognisance of the vocational, clinical and other components of curricula particular to the DHS.
Mechanisms will be established to
- monitor excellence in course content, delivery and assessment, and
- encourage DHS' staff to apply for University rewards for quality teaching and for other Teaching and Learning opportunities (eg strategic initiatives), as they arise.
Standards for course presentation, materials, resources and support will be identified as will opportunities for innovative modes of delivery to on- and off-campus students.
- Funding brokerage
The committee acts as a conduit for University Teaching and Learning activities and initiatives which invite funding applications from Faculties. It will ensure staff in the FHS are aware of the availability of such resources, strategically review applications before their submission and where necessary recommend allocation of funds received.
