International recognition for medical microbiology team

Collaborative research work from Professor Fergal O’Gara and Dr Josh Ramsay, just published from the BIOMERIT WA team in the School of Biomedical Sciences, has received a significant boost by being selected as the ‘Editors choice’ in the Microbiology Journal, one of the world’s leading publications in the field.

The chosen article deals with aspirated bile acid induced biofilm formation in the pathogen Staphylococcus aureus.  Understanding the molecular mechanisms through which this occurs can potentially deliver innovative therapeutic options for the prevention of chronic lung infection in respiratory disease.

The team involved included Drs D. Ulluwishewa and L. Wang, and students Lil Cain and Callen Pereira. The research programme collaborates with the Telethon Kids Institute, and internationally with the BIOMERIT Centre in Cork, Ireland. The article can be accessed at DOI; 10.1099/Mic.0.000317.
