Staff profile – Helen Merryfull
Name: Helen Merryfull.
Title: Teaching Support Officer.
School: Psychology and Speech Pathology.
How long have you worked at Curtin?
Collectively for 6 years.
Where did you work prior to starting at the University?
I took a break from the University to become an electrician and instrumentation technician in the north-west so I could buy a house. I gave up the fly-in fly-out lifestyle in December last year, so I can be in Perth to enjoy the fruits of my labour.
What do you like best about your role?
It’s something new to learn!
Why did you choose your current career path?
I found it’s not until you leave Curtin and work in the private sector that you realise how good Curtin really is (hence why I have returned).
Baker’s Delight counterhand.
Sales at a cable manufacturer.
What project are you currently working on and what does it involve?
I am new to this role so I have quite a bit of learning to do! Outside work, I am working on some photos from my recent holiday.
Your favourite place in the world and why?
New Zealand. I travelled there in July 2016 and it is the most picturesque place I have been to – waking up to postcard scenery every day!
Your favourite cuisine and why?
Italian because I am a pizza fiend…and pasta is pretty awesome too.
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
Everything happens for a reason. Our past, present and future are all linked. And although we may not understand everything that happens to us, there is always a reason — and that reason becomes apparent at some point in time.
Tell us something about yourself that your colleagues wouldn’t know?
I studied Japanese for 7 years.
