How long have you worked at Curtin?

At the time of writing, one week!

Where did you work prior to starting at the University?

I did contract and freelance writing work for various companies and news outlets.

What do you like best about your role?

I enjoy learning about different areas, and I love to write and edit copy.

Why did you choose your current career path?

I have always loved research, books, writing and publishing. I am also strangely interested in, and perturbed by, the contemporary travails of the apostrophe.

First job?

Babysitting for the princely sum of $7.00 an hour. I suspect I may have been exploited.

Worst job?

When I was a very poor student, I worked as a lowly dish washer in a restaurant. The head chef, who had a Gordon-Ramsay-style temperament before Gordon even existed, used to throw plates at my head whenever he was displeased with his apprentice chefs. He was often displeased with his apprentices. I got very good at ducking and weaving whilst scrubbing enormous pots caked in spaghetti marinara. I am still not sure why he aimed at my head, and not the head of the fifteen year old boy cowering in the corner who had made a mistake. Perhaps I looked braver, or nimbler.

I took it as a win that he never actually hit my head with one of his plate missiles, however he did occasionally trick me by throwing plates at my calves, and those ones often got me. It was unfair, I thought, to change the rules without warning me but he was a law unto himself. Nevertheless, he was otherwise kind to me and used to sneak me enormous slices of mud cake at 1.00 am when it appeared I would keel over if I had to wash one more spaghetti marinara pot. He would let me take a five minute break, and sit outside on a dirty bucket next to the rubbish bins and eat it. Good times.

What project are you currently working on and what does it involve?

I am currently compiling this Faculty newsletter, which involves sourcing stories, writing and editing articles and putting together the content in WordPress and Dreamweaver.
