Study Abroad for Pre-Med Students

Program Goals

  • To give Pre-Med students a unique overseas experience.
  • To learn about a different health care system.
  • To raise cultural awareness by working with people form diverse backgrounds.
  • To promote student creativity by encouraging them to start unique programs and projects health are noteworthy.

Components

Academic

  • We encourage students to take classes that they might not be able to take at their own colleges.
  • We recommend two classes from the following: Public Health, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Health Research Methods, Health Promotion, Health Care Systems, Health Ethics, International Health, Communication Skills, Aboriginal Health, Medicine and Dietetics, Interdisciplinary Health Care Studies and Sexology.
  • Students can also take a class in web design and is not a demanding course. It will help you with planning your own Web Page.
  • Some colleges have specific requirements. We also offer many courses in chemistry and biology that students can take to fulfil any requirements they might have.

Community Service

10 Hours/wk >> 4 Credit hours. Curtin has an extensive list of possibilities for community service. Examples:

  • Curtin Volunteers! - Student run organization with many programs available.
  • Laverton Aboriginal Community
  • Derbarl Yerrigan Aboriginal Medical Service
  • Pets as Therapy
  • Work with disabled athletes
  • Parkinson's Foundation
  • Study Buddy
  • Rocky Bay Centre for crippled children

Medical Experience

10 Hours/wk >> 4 Credit hours. While you are here, you can be teamed up with an Australian physician.

  • Learn about Australian health care issues
  • Primary health care in Australia
  • Rural and Aboriginal health care
  • Interact with and talk to patients
  • Make contacts for the future

Research Possibilities

For those of you interested in a research based medical school, you may consider getting involved in research while you are in Australia. The notebook in your study abroad office has a list of possible research placements.

Travel / Medical Missions

During you spring or fall break, or after your semester is over, you may wish to do a medical missions trip. Curtin has many overseas contacts and you are free to try and set something up for yourself. These are not included in the price of tuition.

Other Health Science Students

There are possibilities for you as well. The curriculum can be the same; you will just spend time with a professional in your field of interest. Veterinary - Physical Therapy - Occupational Therapy.

Grading

Normal grading for traditional classes. The community service and medical experience will be graded through a reflective journal and a web site based on your experience in Australia.

Credit Transfer

Since its early days, Curtin has transferred credit to over one hundred American universities and colleges. When considering studies at Curtin check with your university's Study Abroad Director or faculty adviser, to determine what classes may be taken for credit overseas. Though your major will be in Health Sciences as part of your study abroad experience, you may consider a class in a subject not available in the United States such as Aboriginal Studies or Australian Literature and Culture.

Accommodation and Living Costs
