Welcome from the Head of School
Welcome to the School of Biomedical Sciences at Curtin University. It is an extraordinary time of opportunity for biomedical scientists who are at the forefront of our health care and biotechnology industries. New discoveries such as the sequencing of the human genome and identification of genes associated with particular diseases offer exciting opportunities for major advances in human health.
Students in our School come from Australia and many other parts of the world to take advantage of our reputation for excellence in teaching and research. Our graduates in laboratory medicine, molecular genetics & biotechnology, human biology and oral health therapy receive extensive hands-on practical experience, making them job-ready and highly sought-after by employers in a wide range of public and private sector industries in Australia and are able to take opportunities world-wide. They are trained to be creative and innovative and they fulfil important roles in the global health and biotechnology community.
There is a strong nexus between our teaching and research programs with many of our undergraduates progressing towards higher degree studies. The School in concert with its affiliated research institute (Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute CHIRI, – Biosciences) is making a significant contribution towards the prevention and management of chronic diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and metabolic disorders including diabetes. Our School is also acknowledged for its drug discovery, molecular modelling, biotechnology and reproductive biology research, and is capturing international attention with the emergence of new clinical and industrial partnerships in these fields.
I am proud of our team of highly qualified academic, professional and general staff, who are supported by state-of-the-art facilities. I encourage you to explore our web pages and the associated links to learn more about our School and how we can help you to forge an exciting new career in the biomedical sciences. The School welcomes enquiries from prospective students about any of our programs or from researchers interested in collaborations or study visits to our School.
