Adam Murphy: Clinical Dietitian at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital
After completing a teaching degree, some work and travel and I decided that this career path was not for me. I returned to University in 2008 and undertook the Nutrition & Health Promotion double degree. Within nine months I realised that the nutrition part of the degree was of much greater interest to me. I changed to the Bachelor of Nutrition course with the view to becoming a dietitian. In 2011, I graduated from the Postgraduate course in Dietetics.
I have a desire to help others as well as love of learning. Food is something that affects everyone and there is still much we do not know about the role of nutrition and health. This means there is always new knowledge to gain.
As well as being close to home, I had a very positive experience during my teaching degree at Curtin University. The appeal of the double degree offered by Curtin as well as my previous positive experience made it an easy choice.
The Curtin course provided me contact with an array of lecturers from different areas, all of whom had a wealth of knowledge and willingness to share. The biggest thing I am thankful for is the skills the course imparts. I left university with the ability to analyse and interpret information, rather than just being able to recite. This skill is invaluable in a field where so much misinformation exists.
Since graduating I have been working full time at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. This involves providing nutrition support and education to patients. This tertiary hospital setting provides me with experience in a variety of different specialties (e.g. oncology, diabetes). Assessing patient’s needs in this setting involves consideration of their medical management, social situation and the patient’s own personal goals.
You will get out of this course what you put into it. There is a variety of career paths a dietitian can choose, use the time and resources provided to you at university to understand the different areas of nutrition (e.g. public health, food service, clinical dietetics), this will hold you in good stead for when you graduate.
