HealthSmart Solutions Coordinator, Diabetes WA

My road to dietetics was quite unorthodox really. I completed a Bachelor of Health Science (Health Promotion) with a major of nutrition straight out of High School. Post studies, I diverted my attention towards backpacking around the world; working for a commercial radio station; and working as a tour guide around Australia; but the desire to further my studies in nutrition never left me. Through my travels, I saw first hand the effects that poor nutrition can have on communities, and this only strengthened my resolve. At the ripe old age of 27 years, in a Bolivian backpackers (having a shower), I decided the time was nigh. The following year I was back at Uni.

Living in Sydney at the time, Curtin University seemed like a good fit for me as my partner was contemplating moving across to Perth for work. Keen to join her, Curtin’s reputation proceeded itself so the decision was easy.

The Nutrition and Dietetics course equipped me with a sound understanding of nutrition science. Many of these learnings I still use on a daily basis in my current role. The course provides students opportunity to really nut out where their strengths and weaknesses lie, nurturing the development of competencies that underpin the profession.

I currently work as a Dietitian at Diabetes WA.  From tour guiding around Australia, to Master of Ceremonies with a commercial radio station, I never thought these skills could be directly transferred to my current role as a Dietitian at Diabetes WA. My day to day keeps me on my toes. I’m usually out of the office most days, whether it be facilitating group education sessions on remote mine sites or in offices on St George’s Terrace; or individual appointments at the local Aboriginal Medical Service, my work is tremendously varied. When I’m in the office, my time is spent coordinating a team of dedicated and passionate nutritionists and health promoters who deliver our suite of programs and services across Western Australia.

I feel extremely lucky to have studied at Curtin. I was taught by an amazing team of professionals who I have an enormous amount of respect for. I still keep in touch with many of them, continue to learn from them, and receive continued advice and support.
