The Curtin University Stuttering Treatment Clinic offers services to people of all ages for the management of stuttering and fluency disorders. The Stuttering Treatment Clinic is available to anybody with a fluency problem, both adults and children.
Treatment is provided by Speech Pathology students who are closely supervised by an experienced Speech Pathologist and expert in the area of stuttering. Second opinion assessments are also available.
Individual assessment and subsequent treatment sessions are delivered within a family-centred therapy approach. Initial assessment generally takes one hour and comprises an interview, collection of speech measurements, and treatment demonstration. If appropriate, subsequent treatment sessions will be conducted weekly.
Weekly Group Treatment
Weekly Group sessions are also conducted within the Stuttering Treatment Clinic. Group objectives are to:
- promote the implementation of more fluent speech in a supported environment
- provide a forum of support and friendship amongst clients
- address through discussion and activities the negative feelings, thoughts and behaviours associated with stuttering
- promote positive identity and self-esteem, so as to minimise the negative impact that stuttering may have on participation, emotional well-being and quality of life
