The workshop was supported by the Asian Development Bank and included senior academic and government representatives from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Helen Brown, Jeff Spickett and Dianne Katscherian developed and presented draft curricula for HIA courses in three settings:

  • HIA in public health.
  • HIA in environment and urban planning courses.
  • HIA in Environmental Impact Assessment.

Feedback from the participants will be integrated into the HIA curricula with the aim of facilitating regional harmonisation of HIA.

The importance of research and advocacy as part of capacity building in HIA was also discussed at the workshop. Other opportunities arising from the workshop will be pursued in the coming months.  Key findings of the workshop will be presented at the next ASEAN HIA conference in Vietnam in April.
