CHIRI celebrates with B cells, T Cells and blood clots

Blood clot cake and bacteriophage dipping bread were on the menu when staff and students from the Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute (CHIRI) gathered to celebrate the International Day of Immunology on 29 April 2016.

The immunology-themed morning tea also featured flow cytometry sushi, precision B cell cake and chocolate truffle mice amongst other creative entries from the 30 staff and students who attended. PhD student, Gae Ellison’s, bacteriophage dipping bread was voted the winning entry.

In the afternoon, staff and students competed in CHIRI’s inaugural Day of Immunology five-a-side soccer tournament at Lower Henderson Court, outside Building 305.

Four teams entered the competition, T Cells, Dendritic Cells, Macrophages and B Cells. After the round of games, the T Cells were exhausted whilst the Dendritic Cells struggled to process their loss. The B Cells went on to play the Macrophages in the final decider for the cup.

In the first half, the B Cells closely regulated the Macrophages shutting down their attack and preventing them from scoring. The B Cells then released their attack in the second half, scoring 2 goals to win 2-0.

The day was a fantastic success and will become an annual event.
